How To Enjoy The Holidays And Avoid The Commercialization

Buying On Ebay Can Save You Money So Shop Here Instead
Create Your Illusion
You do not have to buy expensive gifts, eat in fancy restaurants, or decorate for glory to enjoy the holidays ahead. In fact there is something to be said about LESS IS MORE when it comes to sharing holidays. Sure the children have visions of sugar plums all through the season. These days those so called sugar plums cost a fortune and many of us have tightened the belt when it comes to spending. Good for you if you have and if you are still considering spending the usual, think again.
There are many ways to create lasting memories and bring joy and laughter into your spirit and the hearts of those you love without breaking your personal banking system. It might mean digging a little deeper into your brain cells but, you can do your thinking while you are on the pot, in the shower, or driving your car. The idea is to look at the holidays from a different point of view. DON'T THINK what can I BUY.....Think.... WHAT CAN I DO. Changing that one simple thought process is the beginning of saving a considerable amount of money during the holiday season.
Another thing that you might want to change is your personal attitude about what you expect of yourself during the holidays. If you feel an obligation to purchase gifts for people that you normally would not walk across the street for think again. This is where you could make some thought changes that are everlasting and, in turn could make a huge difference in years to come

There you have a place to start. It does not have to be all about the shopping spree. You can pick up that cell phone and call an old friend you have not kept in touch with for way too long. Grab your sweet little uncle and dance a jig. Help the family across the street put up some Christmas lights. Bake a plate of cookies and take them to a nursing home.Think about what you might like and share that action with someone.

Such a great first hub!! pls keep on writing..ill be looking forward to your future hubs:)--mhei--
I am also new here and find your hub inspiring. Best to you and your family this holiday season.
I make cards for people for the most part, or jewelry. I also make pictures that I put in frames. Yes some people think I am cheap, but part of me feels it is cheaper to buy a whole bunch of commercialized gifts. I did that a few years back and people did not seem very impressed by it. However, when I started making my own cards people were much more impressed and happy about that. My little sister still has not got the idea yet that you do not have to spend hundreds of dollars on material items for people. She used to buy elaborate Christmas gifts for my sister, my mom, and our niece and nephew, but then she became upset when she received very little in return.
Sure my mom always tried to compensate for it by buying her some nice things, but I think her being the baby of the family resulted in her being a little spoiled. She is not unlike other Americans who expect a slew of gifts on Christmas day. I do not expect lots of gifts, and I actually tell my mom not to get me very much so she can focus on her. I always appreciate smaller and more thoughtful things. Great hub with a great message!
My co-workers could learn a thing or two from your hub. They are all about one up each other and the Christmas buying frenzy. We are in for a commercialized and nauseating month :).
ThisGirl,
Let them go. It can be quite amusing to act as a fly on the wall and watch the zoo animals jump through the hoops. To each his own, I just feel that we are disconnecting from the true meaning of Christmas with all the zeal for spending too much too many! C.S.
Very good point! I shall do that :). The true meaning is much more important to me too.
Changing the thought process from "what can I buy to what can I do" is good advice...I like that.
Great hub! Well my gift list just got shorter after thinking of who I wouldn't walk across the street for. Actually I keep it simple and if you aren't known for giving gifts no one expects them from you. I think the commercialism ruins the holidays. Personally I like thanksgiving (pigging out and cooking- fun!). The season just goes downhill from there, especially by it's marked death- Black Friday (shopping day after Thanksgiving). What a bunch of nuts. I like xmas stockings and will keep that tradition. I have a one year old so I can teach her early- that xmas isn't about gifts.
We are so on the same page about this throw away society America has become! And how the spirit of Christmas has deteriorated into mall presents. Well done hub in my book!
I linked this Hub into a few of my own. Glad you wrote ot. Rated up and awesome.
